What the Internet can do for you

The Internet is amazing.  You don't need me to tell you that.  But, following from my blog post two days ago, there is something the Internet can do for us that is so underrated.

I'm sure you already know what it is.  But, like all good things, it just hit me in a moment of clarity.  They say that you are the average of the five people you spend the most time with.  This is because we are social animals who, ultimately, want to fit in.  However, we live in a world that is becoming more isolated; or, rather, a world where it is possible to stay in your house for weeks on end and still stay alive.

If we are the average of the five people we spend the most time with and if we extend "spending time with" to coming into contact with people online, we are now able to curate who we are the average of with such ease.

As I've said before, my life changed when I stopped watching television and started watching minimalist influences on YouTube.  They, as the name implies, influenced me.  In real life, it is difficult to control the people who you spend time with; perhaps you don't know anyone you want to be like; perhaps the people you want to be like are busy.  We are able to have people we admire in our lives through Instagram, YouTube, Snapchat and so many more applications like them.  Many would even be willing to speak to you personally through email if you needed them.

So carefully choose who you want to be the average of and arrange the time you spend on social media accordingly.  We can use our instinctive need to fit into a group to our advantage and watch ourselves become better people.
