Truth

We have an incredible amount of influence over our own reality.  We think of reality as a truth; it is experienced through our senses.  We see it, smell it, hear it, feel it.  There is evidence of it all around us.  But our true experience of this world is governed by our interpretation of the information gathered through our senses.  And our interpretation is affected by the lives we have lead up until this point.


My point is that reality is a construct and varies from person to person.  Thanks to my education and what I have to come to see as the correct way of doing things, I am very focussed on the truth.  I want evidence to back up my thoughts; research to confirm my beliefs.  I have always been this way.  And even if there is no confirmed truth, it is still possible to rule out things that are not true.

But recently I've been wondering what place truth actually has in my life.  I have come to realise that there can be a difference between truth and my truth.  And this isn't to say that I am ignoring facts or living in a candy forest land of delusion, it just means that, because it's just my interpretation of truth, I have some room to choose what that is.

You can think of it two ways: think of hope, for example.  Even in a situation with no hope; with no logical reason for hope, it is still important to hope.  I need to hope.  You need to hope.  Hope is an important strategy when dealing with particular situations.

The other is likening it to blocking out certain truths in our day-to-day lives because we cannot cope with the weight of them.  The truth is over one billion animals are slaughtered every year in the UK.  The truth is that 400,000 people have died because of the Syrian Civil War.  There's no way I could go through my average day fully comprehending these facts because it's just too upsetting.

We cherry-pick our own reality, looking towards some things and away from others, and it's important to be aware of that.  Our brain loads our experience of this world with coping mechanisms.  You prefer to believe in fate?  That's fine if you're happier for it.  You prefer to believe in soul mates?  Great, as long as it's adding something to your life.

The important thing is to acknowledge that truth - whether your truth or real truth - can change with new information or new experiences.  Truth isn't constant; not from person to person or minute to minute.  So take nothing as a given, question everything and create your own truth.  Design it, shape it and change it if you need to.  As long as you're not hurting anybody, you're not blindly following a doctrine and you're finding joy in your life, embrace the flexibility of truth.

  1. So true when I think of all the poverty and war going on around the world or see facebook links to people suffering. It makes me feel sick to my core then you start thinking what can I do to help- will that charity really get to that person in need or will the admin costs eat into most of it? What can I physically do right that moment to assist in helping ease the suffering of these people.... Not much politics and people more powerful than you are in control.

    The truth is hard to digest so we make our own truth and create a happy little bubble for us to sit in...
