Try

I have recently been moved by Dottie James's YouTube videos in which she attempts to improve her life in one year simply by trying to.  It is such an uncomplicated concept and is so beautiful for it.   I have a vested interest in seeking out philosophies, thought patterns or habits that might improve my life; but I feel they may overcomplicate what could be a fairly easy concept.

Just try.

And keep trying. Try harder and try stronger. Try to understand, try to be compassionate, try to be the best person you can be.

The beauty of trying is that it does not imply a destination and therefore lacks the intimidation of other goal-focussed techniques.  Whereas most motivational language encourages us to focus on our aims, 'trying' seems to describe the process.   We try our best.  We try a new method.  And, most important, we try to keep going.

Trying, the more I think about it, is a skill; a muscle that we can exercise.  It is giving something a go despite any reason not to.  It is changing our approach and seeing how things turn out.  It combines the desire for a better life with the relaxed manner that all happy people seem to have.

"Try".  I'm going to try harder.  There's almost a relief in its simplicity.

And, if all else fails, at least we can say that we tried.
