Is the Law of Attraction real?

Many people who think similarly to how I think have spoken of the Law of Attraction.  If you have not yet heard of this, it is the theory that our thoughts can attract the things we desire into our lives.  Thelawofattraction.com states, "It is the Law of Attraction which uses the power of the mind to translate whatever is in our thoughts and materialise them into reality."

There's lots of talk of conscious vs. subconscious mind and how we can affect the universe with where our focus lies.  If we focus on positive things, we attract positivity; and vice versa.

But is it true?

A lot of people claim it is, and I have no doubt that it is true to them, but I have two qualms with it.  Firstly, it encourages a "damsel in distress" way of thinking.  We, as strong-willed, powerful people, must helplessly wait and beg for the universe to come to our aid instead of inciting change ourselves.

And secondly, it is so hashtag first world problems that it hurts.  Roughly 1.3 billion people live in extreme poverty.  These people are focussing their energy on surviving; on protecting their family. Why is the universe not providing for these people?  Why is it too busy making sure Becky gets her promotion?

The effects of the Law of Attraction can be explained logically.  I love the universe as much as the next person, but I can not wield it with my mind.  As an adherer to Stoic philosophy, it is very clear that there are things that in our control and things that simply aren't.

There are two main discussion points with the Law of Attraction.  The first is that you should know and visualise your dreams.  Focussing on what you want to happen will make it real, they claim.  But dreams only come true if you have taken the time to work out what they are; you can only get somewhere if you know the destination.  It doesn't matter how good your car is; how much petrol you have; how many banging playlists you have made; if you don't know the address, you will not get there.  Because you don't know where "there" is.  You can get somewhere nice, sure, but you won't be able to define it as a "dream coming true".  If you know the destination, you can look for the signs pointing you there.  You probably wouldn't have noticed them if you didn't know that was where you wanted to go.

The second big point of the Law of Attraction is gratitude.  This is a fantastic point, I will give it that.  Gratitude is one of the most important things in the world.  But through our positivity-tinted lenses, the world is undoubtedly going to be looking after us.  You didn't get the job?  Well there is obviously something better around the corner.  The girl you like said no?  The universe is just making sure there's enough room for someone more suited to you.  This constant positive thinking isn't entirely a bad thing.  My main problem is this: if we take risks purely because we believe that the universe is going to catch us, we deny ourselves the opportunity to feel truly brave; to surprise ourselves and make courageous choices.

The universe isn't providing for you; you are!  And that's so much better!

Love,

    1. You are welcome! I don't get it either.... most of time i feel like a "black sheep", not that there's something bad about being a black sheep, but it's nice from time to time that there's someone out there that see the "world" as you do ;) <3
